What Else You Need to Know
(Technical Details)

Choosing the right floor coating is more than just picking a color. At Boreal Polishing & Coatings, we believe in full transparency regarding the science of your floor. Here is the technical breakdown of our process and what makes a high-performance floor last a lifetime.

Concrete Surface Profile (CSP)

Before any resin touches your floor, we must create a "profile." We use industrial planetary grinders to achieve a CSP 2 or 3 (similar to the texture of 60-grit sandpaper). This mechanical bond is what prevents the coating from ever peeling or flaking—a step often skipped by DIY kits.

Moisture Vapor Transmission (MVT)

Concrete is porous and "breathes" moisture. We test your slab’s moisture levels before installation. If levels are high, we apply a specific Moisture Vapor Barrier (like Labpox 30) to prevent osmotic blistering, ensuring the coating doesn't pop off due to underground hydrostatic pressure.

The Chemistry: Epoxy vs. Polyaspartic

We don't use a "one-size-fits-all" product.

  • Base Coat: We typically use high-solids Epoxy for its superior adhesion to concrete.

  • Top Coat: We use Polyaspartic resins. Why? Because they are UV-stable (won't turn yellow from the sun), 4x more abrasion-resistant than standard epoxy, and can be installed in the varying temperatures of the Ottawa climate.

Crack and Joint Treatment

We don't just paint over cracks. We "V-groove" them out, clean them, and fill them with high-modulus rigid or flexible fillers depending on the joint type. This ensures a seamless look that won't telegraph cracks through your new finish.

Return to Service (Curing Times)

Our advanced hybrid systems allow for fast turnaround:

  • Foot traffic: 12 to 24 hours.

  • Heavy items/Vehicles: 48 to 72 hours (depending on humidity and temperature).

Maintenance & Longevity

A professionally installed Boreal floor is non-porous and chemical resistant. To maintain its shine, you only need a neutral pH cleaner and a squeegee. No waxing or buffing is ever required.
